The SKV is the nationally and internationally recognized organization for canoeing in Switzerland. Canoeing refers to all activities in which one or more paddlers propel themselves with a single-bladed (sweep paddle) or double-bladed (double paddle) paddle in the direction of travel. The SKV's objectives are: to promote canoe tourism; to promote canoe competitive sports; to promote education and safety in canoeing; to promote youth development in canoeing; to promote and anchor canoeing in society as a contribution to quality of life and health; to represent the interests of canoeing in Switzerland to the public, authorities, and national and international organizations; to support and coordinate the activities of its sections and to fulfill higher-level tasks according to the principle of subsidiarity; to promote nature and water conservation. Its objectives and tasks are described in more detail in a mission statement. The SKV is a politically independent, denominationally neutral, non-profit, and charitable institution. To fulfill its purpose, it may engage in commercial activities, establish branches and subsidiaries in Switzerland and abroad, participate in other companies in Switzerland and abroad, and conduct all business directly or indirectly related to its purpose. To fulfill its purpose, it may also acquire, encumber, sell, and manage real estate in Switzerland and abroad. To fulfill its purpose, it may also provide financing for its own account or for the account of third parties, as well as provide guarantees and sureties for subsidiaries and third parties.
