The Swiss economy in numbers

Facts about the Swiss business landscape, the NOGA classification and industry distribution — based on official sources such as the Federal Statistical Office (FSO).

What is the NOGA classification and who maintains it?
NOGA (Nomenclature Générale des Activités économiques) is Switzerland's official classification of economic activities. It is maintained by the Federal Statistical Office and builds on the European NACE classification. The current version, NOGA 2025, replaces NOGA 2008 and divides the economy into 22 sections, 87 divisions, 287 groups, 651 classes and 798 types. It will be phased into federal statistics from 2026. ranQ follows this classification and groups it into 18 easily searchable top-level categories.

How are Swiss companies distributed by size?
99.7% of all Swiss companies are SMEs with fewer than 250 employees. Of these, around 90% are micro-enterprises with fewer than 10 employees. Only about 0.3% of all companies count as large enterprises — yet they employ roughly a third of the total workforce.

Where are most companies registered?
The leader is the canton of Zürich with over 110,000 companies, followed by Bern, Vaud and Aargau. Relative to population, the canton of Zug leads with the highest company density per inhabitant.

How many companies are newly founded in Switzerland each year?
In 2023, 46,931 new companies were founded in Switzerland. Staying in business is hard: roughly one in five new ventures closes within a year, and only about half are still active after five years. More than four in five new companies employ just one person.

Which sectors are currently growing the fastest?
IT services, care & healthcare and business consulting have grown above average in recent years. Sustainability-related sectors such as photovoltaics, heat-pump technology and the circular economy also show strong gains — driven by policy conditions and investment in the energy transition.
